  24. <meta content="Data on floristics, structure and environment were collected from quadrats throughout the geographic
  25. range of alpine vegetation in Australia. These data were used to explore the floristic and environmental
  26. relationships of ten alpine vegetation formations: bolster heath, coniferous heath, heath, alpine
  27. sedgeland, fjaeldmark, tall alpine herbfield, short alpine herbfield, grassland, bog and fen. Alpine
  28. sedgeland and coniferous heath, and tall alpine herbfield and grassland, proved to be closely similar in
  29. their floristics. Grassland and coniferous heath were most separated in ordination space. The
  30. environmental variables with the largest numbers of significant differences between formations were
  31. extractable phosphorus, summer temperatures, winter temperatures and topography. However, many
  32. other edaphic, climatic, topographic and biotic variables were important in discriminating between
  33. formations. The results of the formation-environment analyses were largely consistent with the
  34. relationships suggested in the previous literature. However, some environmental differences between
  35. formations that were observed or posited from local studies did not prove to be exportable to the alpine
  36. zone as a whole. Edaphic and topographic variables appear to be more important in discriminating the
  37. environments of alpine formations than the environments of alpine floristic communities." name="eprints.abstract" />

  281. range of alpine vegetation in Australia. These data were used to explore the floristic and environmental&#13;
  282. relationships of ten alpine vegetation formations: bolster heath, coniferous heath, heath, alpine&#13;
  283. sedgeland, fjaeldmark, tall alpine herbfield, short alpine herbfield, grassland, bog and fen. Alpine&#13;
  284. sedgeland and coniferous heath, and tall alpine herbfield and grassland, proved to be closely similar in&#13;
  285. their floristics. Grassland and coniferous heath were most separated in ordination space. The&#13;
  286. environmental variables with the largest numbers of significant differences between formations were&#13;
  287. extractable phosphorus, summer temperatures, winter temperatures and topography. However, many&#13;
  288. other edaphic, climatic, topographic and biotic variables were important in discriminating between&#13;
  289. formations. The results of the formation-environment analyses were largely consistent with the&#13;
  290. relationships suggested in the previous literature. However, some environmental differences between&#13;
  291. formations that were observed or posited from local studies did not prove to be exportable to the alpine&#13;
  292. zone as a whole. Edaphic and topographic variables appear to be more important in discriminating the&#13;
